The animated film was produced by the Soyuzmultfilm studio and is inspired by the works of German writer E. T. A. Hoffmann. Development took more than 15 years, making the film one of the largest auteur projects in contemporary Russian animation. Created using traditional three-dimensional puppet animation, the production involved more than one hundred unique handmade puppets. The film premiered at international festivals in 2018, including the Berlin International Film Festival.
The story centers on Ernst Hoffmann — a lawyer, musician, and writer living between reality and the world of his own imagination. The film intertwines biographical elements with motifs from three of his most famous tales — “Little Zaches,” “The Golden Pot,” and “The Sandman” — creating a fantastical and philosophical narrative rich in allegory, transformation, and surreal imagery.
